Terms
Last updated 25 October 2026
In short: the alpha is free, your work stays yours, you can export it and leave at any time, and we give 30 days' notice before anything costs money or shuts down.
These terms are between you and Jonas Fenger, a private person in Denmark who runs Bateson Cloud until a company takes it over ("we"). They cover Bateson Cloud, the hosted service at app.bateson.app. If you use Bateson for an organisation, you accept them for that organisation as well. How we handle personal data is in the Privacy policy.
The alpha
Bateson Cloud is in an invite-only alpha. During the alpha:
- It is free. Workspaces get the Team plan at no cost until the public launch.
- Nothing is charged without your say. Before paid plans begin we email every workspace owner at least 30 days ahead. A workspace pays only once its owner chooses a plan.
- It is still being built. Features change, things break, and there is no guaranteed uptime. Keep your own copy of what matters; a workspace's owner can export it as files at any time.
Your account
An account is for one person, signed in with an email address they control. Anyone who can read that address's email can sign in as you, so keep it safe, and tell us at hello@bateson.app if you think someone has. You must be at least 16.
Your work
What you and your team put into Bateson stays yours. You give us permission to store, copy, show and send it only as far as running Bateson for your team needs, and that permission ends when the work is deleted. You are responsible for having the right to put the work in, and for what it says.
During the alpha, do not put in payment card numbers, passwords or other credentials, or special categories of personal data such as health records.
A workspace belongs to the organisation its owners set it up for. Owners decide who is a member and can remove members. Work a member did stays in the workspace's record.
Agents and keys
A key acts as the person who made it: anything sent or written with it counts as theirs. Keep keys secret, and revoke one you no longer use. A key can send work and comment, but it can never decide; a person does that.
Fair use
Do not use Bateson to break the law or anyone's rights, to send spam, to probe or attack it or other people's workspaces, to get round its limits, or to resell access to it. We may suspend an account or a workspace that does, at once if the harm is serious, and tell its owner why.
The code
Bateson's code is open source under the GNU AGPL, version 3. That licence covers the code, and you can run it yourself on its terms. These terms cover only the hosted service. The Bateson name and mark are ours.
Ending
You can stop using Bateson at any time, and ask us to delete your account or a workspace you own. If we end the alpha or close Bateson Cloud, we tell owners at least 30 days ahead, so they can export their workspaces.
Liability
During the alpha Bateson Cloud is provided as it is, without warranties beyond those the law requires. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses such as lost profit or lost data, and our total liability is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the last twelve months and €100. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for intent or gross negligence, or your rights as a consumer.
Changes
We may change these terms. For a change that matters we email account holders at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you do not agree, you can export your work and leave before then. These terms are part of Bateson's open-source code, so every change to them is public in the code's history.
Law
These terms are governed by Danish law, and disputes go to the Danish courts, unless the law where you live as a consumer gives you other rights.
